LATEST NEWS - COVID UPDATE

Following the government's announcement last week regarding the Covid booster vaccination programme and its impact on GP Surgeries, we at Abbey Surgery wanted to keep you all informed of our plans moving forward.

As you know, Abbey Surgery has been actively involved in the Covid-19 vaccination efforts. For almost a year we have delivered first, second, third and booster doses delivering them in our Surgery. This has been possible because of our staff working overtime supporting our efforts.

Our priority remains the health of our patients and we are available for urgent and routine appointments as we have been throughout the pandemic.

We recognise the importance of booster vaccinations given the emergence of the Omicron variant and will be increasing our clinics to give as many doses as possible.

The media reports suggest we will be sacrificing elements of care to provide this. We want to reassure you that this is not the case. The guidance means we can prioritise clinical care and vaccinations over bureaucratic form filling and tasks that we are required to do to meet targets. We will still be asking patients to have reviews for their chronic conditions as well as managing acute and chronic health care.

We wish all our patients a safe, happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing those of you taking up their vaccinations in the near future.

COVID RESTRICTION UPDATE:

Throughout the pandemic we have strived to make the surgery as safe as possible for all our patients and staff.

We will continue to do so going forward.

From the 19th July 2021 nothing will change at the surgery - patients will still need to wear a mask, socially distance and use hand sanitiser in the surgery and staff will continue to wear PPE.

We do understand that it can be frustrating but we know that when people come to us they are sick and vulnerable (and some cannot receive the covid vaccinations due to medical reasons) so we feel it would be wrong to not take these small precautions that can protect people.

In terms of opening up, as many of you know, we have never been shut and in fact have consulted with much higher numbers of patients than we did pre-covid ( face to face, by phone, by e-consult and by video), not counting vaccinating over 90% of the adult population in the last six months.

Abbey Surgery has come so far in trying to minimise the impact of Covid and we are sure you understand that we need to keep the surgery as safe for ALL patients as we can.

Coronavirus

Do not enter if you have:

  • a temperature
  • new continuous cough
  • may have been in contact with someone who has it, or have been to places where there are lots of cases of the virus

If you have these symptoms, however mild, you should stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when symptoms started. If a member of your household has symptoms you should stay at home and not leave their house for 10 days.

You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 10 days, contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111.

Services

We would value your opinion on what medical services you would like to see developed in Tavistock so that we can share your ideas with other Practices now working with us as West Devon Primary Care Home and the local Clinical Commissioning Group. We would then campaign on your behalf for more localised services should there be enough demand and funding. Please feel free to either e-mail us at abbey.surgery@nhs.net or write in addressed for my attention.
